Man drowns trying to rescue two children in water

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – The body of a 44-year-old Brampton, Ont., man who drowned during a rescue attempt has been recovered in Peterborough.

Peterborough-Lakefield police say Raffeenddin Mohammed was with family members Sunday afternoon when two children, who were relatives, dropped an item into the water and attempted to retrieve it.

Police say the children were caught in the current of the Trent-Severn Waterway.

They say Mohammed and two family members attempted to rescue the children but were pulled into the current.

The children and their two relatives were rescued by people in the area.

Mohammed’s body was recovered just before 10 a.m. Monday morning.
