Drake wins Best Male Hip Hop Artist at BET Awards

TORONTO — Canadian rap star Drake won Best Male Hip Hop Artist at Sunday’s BET Awards.

The Toronto native, who did not attend the show at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live, had five nominations.

Toronto’s Director X lost the Best Director award to Hype Williams.

Beyonce was named Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and earned Best Collaboration for “Drunk In Love” with husband Jay Z and the FANdemonium Award.

Pharrell earned trophies for his hit “Happy” and as Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Nicki Minaj picked up Best Female Hip Hop Artist.

August Alsina was named Best New Artist and beat out stars like Drake and Beyonce to take the Viewers’ Choice Award.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Lionel Richie, who performed hits “Easy Like Sunday Morning” and “All Night Long (All Night)”.

In acting categories, Lupita Nyong’o and Chiwetel Ejiofor won for their work in 12 Years a Slave, which was named Best Picture.
