EDMONTON – The man police believe is responsible for a hit-and-run that killed a 33-year-old father was caught downtown Monday morning.

Edmonton police confirm he was apprehended near Jasper Avenue and 90th Street at around 10:12 a.m.

Last week, Edmonton police identified the suspect in the June 13 fatal hit-and-run as 31-year-old Jonathan Jake Cardinal.

At 9:47 a.m. Monday, officers responded to a report of an unconscious man passed out in a vehicle at 86 Street and 106 Avenue. Police confirmed the vehicle was stolen, and woke up the man inside, who they believed was intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. Police also seized drugs – suspected methamphetamine – from his possession.

“Upon the members responding, were were not aware of the identity of the subject in the vehicle yet,” said Acting Staff Sgt. Scott Carter.

Witnesses told Global News the suspect allegedly resisted arrest, ran away and broke into an apartment, before he was caught with the help of the K9 unit.

“It all started where a vehicle was pulled over, just down the alleyway there… and it was a silver vehicle, gentleman was pulled out of the vehicle and he was put on the hood, but he was not handcuffed, so he ended up turning around and fighting the police officer,” said Jenaya Ramcharan who lives nearby.

“Shirt came off, and he started running, they started chasing him… he hid behind this little block area here, and I’m up there on the sixth floor, and I saw that and I called 911 because I know that there are kids on the bottom floor. While I was on the phone with 911 I heard the smashing of the window.”

Police say the accused ran from the scene, smashed through a glass patio door, was cut several times, and ran into the suite, which was unoccupied at the time. They say he continued to run away from officers, entering a second suite and allegedly stealing car keys, before running away and hiding.

“I seen the guy hiding down in the complex,” said Curtis Kish. “He was hiding behind a bush. He was all covered in blood with no shirt.”

Kish witnessed police apprehend Cardinal with the help of police service dog Viper.

“They came around the corner, he was hiding in the far corner of the complex and he ran away, the dog got him… He was screaming, they put a mask over his face.”

Paramedics assessed Cardinal and he was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

On the morning of Friday, June 13, 33-year-old Adam Groves was run over and killed by his own truck as he tried to stop it from being stolen.

Cardinal is facing charges of manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and theft over $5,000. Additional charges are pending.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank members of the public who – without their involvement – this arrest would not have happened today,” said Carter.

“I think we’re all relieved he’s in custody and no longer poses any threat to the public.”
