MPI seeks rate increase, blames increase in winter claims

WINNIPEG – Manitoba Public Insurance is seeking a big rate increase after a record number of crash claims over the winter.

The Crown corporation announced Monday it has asked the Public Utilities Board for a 3.4 per cent hike in vehicle insurance prices. The corporation played down the financial impact of the rate increase on consumers in a news release.

“More than half of our policy holders will see a rate increase of $20 or less per year or a decrease in their premium,” said Dan Guimond, president and CEO of Manitoba Public Insurance. “Manitoba had a long winter with severe driving conditions, resulting in claims costs jumping 13.5 per cent.”

The increase will take effect March 1, 2015, if approved by the Public Utilities Board.
