REGINA – The provincial government is reducing the speed limit on Highway 12 at Martensville, Sask. in an effort to improve safety.

Effective Tuesday, June 3, the speed limit from about two kilometres south to one kilometre north of the city will be 90 km/h.

That stretch of highway has been the location of a number of deadly crashes over the years, including one on April 22, 2014 that left one man dead.

“There are three components to traffic safety: engineering, enforcement and education,” said Don McMorris, minister of highways and infrastructure.

“Our government continues to assess what steps we can take in terms of infrastructure and traffic operation improvements, increased police presence and public education.”

That will include a new overpass at Martensville for which a location has been identified.

The reduced speed pilot project will be monitored to study the impact on traffic safety.

If the results are positive, the province may consider other highway locations for reduced speed limits.
