CALGARY – The Calgary Police Service is launching a summer Mountain Bike Team (MBT) to help patrol south Calgary communities.

Five full-time members were deployed on Thursday to quickly and quietly respond to Calgarians in need and crimes in progress.

The mountain bikes allow officers faster access to areas like LRT platforms, shopping corridors and Fish Creek Park so they can better address concerns in those areas.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

So far the team has intervened in numerous incidents, including break and enters, missing person investigations, as well as the prevention of a commercial robbery.

Police credit those crime prevention successes to the silent nature of mountain bikes and the greater interaction officers have with residents.
