TORONTO — Canadian rock musician Deryck Whibley said Friday he is giving up alcohol after falling unconscious and ending up in hospital.
“My liver and kidney’s collapsed on me,” the Sum 41 singer explained in a message posted on his website. “Needless to say it scared me straight. I finally realized I can’t drink anymore.”
Whibley, 34, said he was rushed to hospital a month ago after “collapsing to the ground unconscious” late one night.
“The reason I got so sick is from all the hard boozing I’ve been doing over the years. It finally caught up to me,” he wrote. “I was drinking hard every day.”
Whibley, who was married to Avril Lavigne from 2006 to 2010, also revealed he is engaged to girlfriend Jocelyn Aguilar.
But the rocker is now focused on his health.
“If I have one drink the docs say I will die,” wrote the Toronto native. “I’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly. I didn’t, and look where that got me.”
In 2011, Sum 41 was forced to cancel a number of concerts after Whibley reportedly injured his back.
The group has not released a new studio album since 2011’s Screaming Bloody Murder.
Whibley is the only founding member of the band who remains.
