WOODSTOCK, N.B. – Police think organized crime has something to do with a recent string of truck thefts in New Brunswick.

RCMP say seven transport trucks and five trailers have been taken from the Woodstock area in the last two weeks.

Mounties and those in the trucking industry think organized criminals, with links as far away as Montreal, may be responsible.

Several of the stolen trucks and trailers have been found, emptied of their loads, in Quebec.

Truck owners say they’re targeted for their cargo.

"They want the commodity," says Donald Deveau, owner of Deveau’s Trucking.

"They do not want the trucks (or) trailers. They are just merely tools to get the product where they need it."

One stolen rig had up to 140,000 worth of power tools on board.

According to the Canadian Cargo Association , transport truck thefts are more common than many realize and it costs trucking companies about $5 billion each year.

"It is reasonable to believe that an organized group could be involved," says Cpl. Yann Audoux. "They are obviously familiar with the trucking industry.

The investigation into the thefts is ongoing, Audoux says, involving RCMP agencies from Woodstock and Montreal.
