SASKATOON – A home had to be demolished after a Saturday morning fire in Saskatoon’s Mount Royal neighbourhood.

At 4:37 a.m., firefighters received a 911 call about heavy smoke billowing coming from 117 Ave. S North.

Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and fire coming through the front door.

Fire crews initiated an interior attack, but switched to exterior fire suppression when the roof became unstable. The blaze was brought under control within 40 minutes.

The house was vacant at the time of the fire.

Saskatoon Fire Department says the way the damaged home stood following the blaze left it unsafe and it was demolished so it did not pose a risk to the public.

Damage was estimated at $175,000.
