TORONTO – The president of a Montreal customs brokerage firm has raised some eyebrows after he posted a Facebook message promising his employees an extra vacation day this year if the incumbent Parti Quebecois loses the election.

“Delmar, [sic] owners and shareholders are extremely proud Canadians and are strongly against the policies of the current separatist PQ government,” wrote Delmar International Inc. President and CEO Robert Cutler.

“We believe in and support multiculturalism and freedom of religion!”

The 33-day election campaign has gotten ugly, with much of the discussion focused sovereignty, personal ethics and the PQ’s controversial charter of values.

The PQ responded to the company’s Facebook post by issuing a promise of its own to create jobs in all regions of the province.

Cutler’s Facebook post was removed Monday morning and replaced with an apology.

“It was not my intent to influence your vote. This is first and foremost a democratic society and you are of course free to personally do as you choose,” Cutler wrote in both French and English.

“My views are mine and I apologize and regret if you or anyone felt intimidated, influenced or offended. This was not my intent.”

Despite Cutler’s explanation, those on social media weren’t too accepting of his comments and some called for a boycott of the company.
