Hockey Manitoba investigating Stonewall game that ended in brawl

WINNIPEG — A three-person Hockey Manitoba committee will investigate an ugly hockey incident in Stonewall on Sunday.

The committee will interview coaches, witnesses and use a recently released referee report before they make decisions on punishments.

According to the report, four match penalties were handed to Lake Manitoba during the game: one for kicking, one for shooting a puck at an official and two for contacting an official.

Lake Manitoba’s coach said his team was treated unfairly.

“It was one-sided penalties,” said coach Darrel Swan. “The linesman was swearing, yelling and grabbing and pulling and using racial remarks towards these kids.”

The incident highlights yet another ugly Manitoba minor hockey melee — one where RCMP were called because the game got so out of hand.

Hockey Manitoba provided no timeline for when any decisions will be made on punishments.

“It’s disappointing and disturbing at the same time,” said Stonewall coach Peter Mandryk. “You never want see that stuff in a hockey game and we’re confident Hockey Manitoba will deal with it the way they need to deal with it.”

The championship banner also went missing after the game but it has since been returned.
