Back to the 70s

April 2, 2014. Hope you watch tonight for my new Kim Jung-un haircut. I want to stay up on the latest fashion trends. Oh, wait. This is April 2, not April 1st. Never mind.

Today for Scene & Heard we met up with the two student curators of the new art exhibit at the Helen Christou gallery at the U of L called “The 70s: On The Flip Side.” Noemi Guzman and Kaitlynn Smart dug into the massive U of L art collection for some work from the 70s. I tried in vane to tell them that in no way was I around during the 70s even though I do remember using the 70s phrase “I’ll catch you on the flip side.” As a side note, Noemi is orginally from Mexico. The U of L has an impressive population of students from foreign countries. Kaitlynn is from that foreign land called Saskatchewan.

Each year Lucky Star Guitar donates 2 guitars to the Geomatic Attic who then sell raffle tickets throughout the year. The guitars are signed by all of the performers that come through the Attic and at the end of their concert year (usually late November)they do the draw and the winner takes their choice of the 2 guitars. The guitar not picked then hangs on the wall of the Lucky Star Vintage Guitar store at 1108 – 6th Avenue South. Last year’s winner was Bob Winter and it wasn’t until today that the “axe” was delivered to him. You’ll see that tonight on Scene & Heard. Bob has decided that it’s time to start taking guitar lessons. Hopefully by next year he’ll be so good that he’ll be a headliner. Proceeds from the raffle will go to the digital audio program at the U of L. Next big show will be a CD release party April 12 for Dave McCann and the Firehearts. Dave has been on Scene & Heard many times and we hope to have him again next week.

We’ll have a beautiful dog from the Humane Society today. “Jade” is a gentle soul who has some abandonment issues so there’s going to have to be a little extra care needed. You can call the Humane Society at 403-320-8991 to find out more.
