Slave Lake residents need new fridges, freezers

SLAVE LAKE, Alta. – There’s a big demand for new refrigerators and freezers in Slave Lake, Alberta.

Thousands of residents who were chased out by the massive wildfire two weeks ago are now returning home to appliances full of rotting food.

City spokesman Tom Moore says he was able to save his fridge by cleaning it with vinegar and water, but adds that many people will have to buy new ones.

It’s estimated up to four-thousand fridges and freezers will be going in the garbage.

And Moore says they must be dealt with soon because the smell of rotting food will attract bears.

Nearly a third of the buildings in Slave Lake were lost to the fire.

Cooler temperatures over the weekend helped firefighters keep control of a number of wildfires burning across the province.

A total of 31 fires are still burning and six are considered out of control.

No new fires have been sparked in the past 24 hours but the wildfire threat is still considered high across part of central and northern Alberta
