Big support as John Tory kicks off mayoral campaign

TORONTO – John Tory officially kicked off his mayoral campaign Wednesday night to a room full of supporters in downtown Toronto.

The businessman and former talk show host unveiled the three pillars of his campaign: affordability, functionality and livability, and made it clear he would keep taxes low.

“I am the only candidate that will take Toronto not left, not right, but forward,” he told the cheering crowd.

Tory took aim at incumbent Rob Ford, saying that Ford “has disappointed everyone with his behaviour.”

He also set his sights on opponent Olivia Chow.

Referring to Chow’s comments she would “eventually” build the downtown relief subway line, he said, “eventually doesn’t cut it in the real world.”

Chow’s campaign responded to Tory’s comments in an email release Wednesday night.

“Olivia of course supports a relief line. The issue is how does one pay for a relief line,” the release said.

With regards to the subway expansion to Scarborough, Tory promised he would keep the plan in place.

Tory ran for mayor of Toronto in 2003 against David Miller but lost, bringing in 38 per cent of the vote compared to Miller’s 43 per cent.

He told Global News in February that “The skills and experience I have, I think are right to bring the kind of leadership to the city now to get some things done, getting transit built and getting people working together.”
