The winter that refuses to die: Cold and snow on its way…again

WATCH: Toronto is getting another blast of winter. Global’s Chief Meteorologist Anthony Farnell has all the gruesome details.

TORONTO – You may have been enjoying Tuesday’s weather. But Mother Nature is just teasing us, because it’s back.

The cold. The snow. The misery.

It’s no wonder Environment Canada’s Senior Climatologist David Phillips has flown the coop.

The weather agency has issued a special weather statement for much of southern Ontario, including Toronto.

The snow will start early Wednesday morning, as a low-pressure system tracks into the lower Great Lakes. By Wednesday evening’s commute, close to 15 cm will have fallen in the city, with higher accumulations in a stretch from Windsor to Hamilton. Lower amounts are expected to the north.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for Windsor, Chatham, Innisfil, Orangeville, Niagara, St. Catharines and east in Kingston to Cornwall.

The snow is expected to continue eastward and affect New Brunswick, southern Quebec, and Nova Scotia. Winter storm warnings, as well as blizzards and rainfall warnings have been issued across the provinces.

In the United States, the National Weather Service has also issued winter warnings across Michigan, Illinois, northern Indiana, northern Ohio, western New York, and New England.

And that’s not all: the cold is making a comeback, too.

Arctic air seems to once again be plunging down into southern Canada, and northern Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario are going to feel it. Winnipeg, which is already feeling the freeze, had a high of -11 C on Tuesday and will see an overnight low of -22 C. The average daytime high for this time of year is -2 C, with a low of -12 C.

Toronto will go from 10 C — on the plus side for the first time in what feels like ages — to -5 C by Wednesday afternoon. It will feel like -13 C with the wind chill. Overnight temperatures will plunge to -15 C with a wind chill of -25 C. On Thursday, the high will be just -8 C with a wind chill closer to -16 C.

The average day time high for this time of year is 4 C, with a low of -5 C.

The good news — yes, there’s good news — is that on Friday the high is expected to be near 6 C. So that not only means a warm day, but it also means a melt of the snow that will have fallen on Wednesday.

But next week…well, let’s just say the warmth isn’t expected to stick around.

It looks like between an unusual high on Tuesday and abnormally frigid temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday, that Mother Nature is just a bit confused.
