YORKTON, Sask. – Two long-time friends are now lottery winners.
Donald Tkachuk and Roby Sharpe have done a lot together over the years, but Sharpe received no bigger surprise than a phone call from Tkachuk.
Tkachuk was checking a stack of tickets when the screen went blue with writing on the bottom saying ‘major win.’
The ticket was for the guaranteed $1 million Lotto 649 prize for the Feb 26. draw.
“The clerks behind the counter were really excited,” Tkachuk said.
It was then Tkachuk made the once-in-a-lifetime phone call to his best friend.
At first, Sharpe thought Tkachuk was joking.
“He sounded kind of sad and serious,” Sharpe said when recalling the phone call.
When Tkachuk couldn’t convince him they were big winners, he headed over to Sharpe’s home.
“He was acting all cool, and I asked him, ‘What are you doing here?’”
It was at that point Tkachuk showed him the ticket and validation slip.
The pair plan to use their winnings to pay down some debt, help family and Sharpe may fix up the family cabin.
