REGINA – Hockey season is a Canada’s favorite time of the year, but the soaring equipment and enrollment costs are keeping many youth off the ice.

The Ranch Ehrlo outdoor hockey league program helps get those kids laced up, and part of a team.

“I always wanted to play hockey but my parents can’t afford the equipment,” said Matthew Langille-King, a participant. “If we didn’t have this program, I would probably be sitting at home playing video games all day.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

On Sunday, the organization held their 21st annual outdoor hockey year-end tournament in Lumsden. Langille-King has been taking part for six years.

“Every child should have the chance to play sports – it doesn’t matter where you live in the city,” said Sandra Langille, Matthew’s mother.

The outdoor hockey league program helps build self-confidence by giving low-income families an opportunity to take part in Canada’s beloved pastime.

While it costs thousands of dollars each year, donations help keep the program afloat.

The program provides equipment for all athletes head to toe, free of charge.
