SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon if offering free showers to people who remain without water thanks to a rash of pipe or main breakages.

To date in 2014, there have been approximately 102 breaks – each affecting about 20 to 25 properties.

City crews attempt to restore water service within 24 hours but frigid conditions outside have led to the number of breaks doubling versus what’s typical of this time of year.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

That’s left the city playing a game of ‘catch up’ on repairs.

Residents who are still without water can shower at any of the city’s leisure centres. All you need is a driver’s license or a utility bill showing your address.

“Some of our facilities, such as Lakewood Civic Centre, Lawson Civic Centre, Shaw Civic Centre, do have family change areas so it will make it a bit more convenient if they are coming in with young families,” said Loretto Odorico, recreation and sport acting director.

The city has four emergency water supply trailers residents can fill up at while crews work to repair breaks.

But with more breaks than trailers, many residents have been going to work without the use of their bathroom utilities.

An additional two trailers are set to arrive this week.
