More frozen pipes in Regina

An unusual amount of pipes have been bursting in Regina, especially in the past two weeks and the city blames the increase on extremely cold temperatures combined with a lack of snow for insulation. Adrian Raaber / Global News

REGINA – Several Regina residents are still without running water following water main breaks in the last week.

City crews are currently responding to 54 incidents.

Since the beginning of 2014, over 30 homes have had their pipes freeze. In an average January and February, staff say that would only happen to two or three homes.

The city’s water & sewer construction manager says there is help for families without water during repairs.

“We’ll bring out a potable water container. They’re disposable, if you want to refill them, refill them,” said John Ullrich. “If there’s a main break and we have a block of water out, we have water tankers that we’ll put on site.”

Staff say frost has reached about six feet underground, which is believed to be the lowest in 30 years.

The problem appears to be worse in Sasktoon, where more than $1-million has been spent repairing water main breaks.

Each break is estimated to cost over $11,000.

Ullrich says crews in Regina are working nearly “’round the clock” to increase response time.
