WINNIPEG – Manitoba’s Opposition Tories have followed through on a promised lawsuit against the government’s provincial sales tax increase.
Progressive Conservative Leader Brian Pallister said last year’s tax hike was an attack on the democratic rights of Manitobans.
The government also changed the balanced budget law, which required a referendum before any sales tax increase.
“The NDP have chosen to bring in the PST above the wishes of the people, but the NDP is not above the law. The NDP is on shaky legal ground here, but have refused to do the right thing so we will take the NDP to court. It was our pledge and is the right thing to do.” PC Leader Brian Pallister is quoted in a news release.
Pallister wants the courts to declare the tax increase illegal.
A court hearing is set for April 25.
The NDP government has said it followed the rules when it raised the tax to eight per cent from seven on July 1.
