Canada’s Marianne St-Gelais has failed to qualify for the finals of the women’s short track 500-metre speed skating event.
St-Gelais finished third in her heat, after starting in a difficult position on the outside edge of the track. Only the top two of four skaters in each semifinal race make it to the medal round.
The 23 year-old from Roberval, Quebec, was a medal hopeful for Canada in this event. She won silver in this distance in Vancouver, where she also won a silver medal from the 3000-metre relay.
In the second semifinal race, world champion skater Kexin Fan of China, fell early in the race and also failed to qualify for the final.
St-Gelais’ boyfriend, fellow short track skater Charles Hamelin, qualified for the finals of the men’s 1000-metre event. He already won gold in the 1500-metre.
St-Gelais will compete next on Saturday, Feb. 15 in the 1500-metre event.
