A new report says a proposed $5 billion resort in the Garibaldi Highlands would dramatically change Squamish, creating thousands of jobs and a population boom.
The plan for the four-season resort has been around for over 20 years, but there’s still no decision on whether or not it will actually proceed.
The resort’s town centre would look down on Squamish and the developers say that the all-season amenities, at half the size, would compliment nearby Whistler.
The resort could be a huge economic generator for Squamish and closer to a larger population in Vancouver.
The report was paid for by the developer as part of an environmental assessment. It’s estimated the resort would increase the population of Squamish by 22%.
It would also add 7,000 full and part time jobs, plus $2.3-billion to B.C.’s GDP.
The Ministry of Environment and the District of Squamish still have to approve the proposal.
