Possible connection between missing man and river search in Saskatoon

Watch the video above: police believe there may be a connection between a missing man and a river search

SASKATOON – A man who went missing over the weekend might be the same person who is believed to have fallen through the ice on the South Saskatchewan River early Sunday morning.

Late Tuesday afternoon, a memorial has been set up at the site in Rotary Park near the river’s edge where the person was last seen. Numerous bouquets of flowers and a Saskatchewan Roughrider football have been placed in the snow.

Police confirm there’s reason to believe this incident at the river may be related to a missing person’s case.

At 12:30am Sunday, a witness reported seeing a man walking on the river ice near Rotary Park. Emergency crews were called out and found footprints leading to the water. Thirty minutes prior to this incident, Gregory MacIntosh, better known as Myles, was last seen by friends at Outlaws Country Rock Bar on Idylwyld Drive North.

Police believe MacIntosh had been drinking. He hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“There has been no activity, that is on his cell phone,” said Kelsie Fraser with Saskatoon Police Service, “as well as no activity on his banking.”

Family Facebook posts say MacIntosh’s wallet was found at the bar and he had no cash or cards. Family also confirms MacIntosh and his fiancé were set to be married in the coming weeks.

Global News spoke with a relative who said MacIntosh’s fiancé will not be talking with media. Because of the chronological order of the two incidents, police are warning the family of all possibilities.

“Yesterday we met with the victim’s fiancé and her family and explained the investigation and where it was at,” said Fraser. “It may be related to the incident where a man is believed to have fallen through the ice in the river” she said. Police met with MacIntosh’s family Tuesday.

Police say both cases are still being investigated separately but do say, MacIntosh is their only lead pertaining to the river incident.

A dive attempt by emergency crews is risky given the frigid conditions. The possibility of a water search was called off Monday.

MacIntosh hails from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and studied at the University of New Brunswick.
