SASKATOON – It used to be popcorn and soft drinks, but the standard for movie snacks has changed, add alcohol to the list starting Friday night.

A Saskatoon theatre is the first in the province to offer the adult beverages to those catching a flick.

The Broadway Theatre will make provincial history tonight.

“We’re moving into the future, that’s exactly how I perceive the Broadway as a business working, we can’t work as a museum, we can’t do things that was working 40 years ago or 20 years ago,” said Kirby Wirchenko, Broadway Theatre executive director.

“We need to be progressive and just the thought of being last to this change just made me want to throw up, I want to be first.”

The government now allows movie theatres to sell and serve alcohol in age restrictive areas and while the Broadway Theatre is the first to apply for this new license, it’s not a new thing to the Broadway, it’s been able to serve adult beverages during live shows for years.

“It’s a nice option, I think when people want that night out experience they can come, if they choose to have a beer choose to have a wine, great,” said Andrew McDonald, Saskatoon Soaps Improv Comedy performer.

“For those who don’t choose to have it, it’s wonderful too but for those who want to have a night out experience where you’re out on the town I think it’s a nice compliment to your evening,”

Kirby Wirchenko doesn’t think serving alcohol will make that big a difference to attendance or the bottom line, the theatre makes just as much selling a large soft drink.

Construction is well underway next to Galaxy Cinema in Saskatoon.  When the VIP Theatre is completed this summer, people will be able to order food and drinks, including alcohol, right from the comfort of their seats.

The Broadway Theatre has restricted it’s 9 p.m. shows to people over the age of 19, allowing them to serve alcohol.
