Wild weather causing trouble across Alberta

The weather is making for some treacherous conditions around the province.

Alberta RCMP is strongly advising motorists not to travel on Highway 2 from Edmonton to Calgary due to whiteout conditions.  They say highways are extremely slippery, and visibility is very poor.

Meanwhile, in Calgary, a flash freeze warning has been issued by Environment Canada, with a fast-moving cold front set to sweep across southern Alberta starting Friday night.

It’s forecast to bring frigid temperatures, snow and strong winds. As a result, there could be zero visibility at some point, especially in exposed areas and along highways.

Global News’ weather specialist Carla Bosacki says temperatures are expected to plummet to -18 degrees, and Calgary should see about 4 cm of snow.

The problems don’t end there. Global viewer Olivia Dawn Ward described Highway 2 between Slave Lake and Edmonton as “horrific,” sending the following picture:

A number of semi-trailers blew over on Highway 22 on Friday, blocking the road about 20 kilometers north of Highway 3.

Those who do need to travel south should use alternate routes.
