Reporter who wrote article alleging John Furlong abused students asks for defence money

Laura Robinson, the journalist who wrote an article alleging former VANOC boss John Furlong verbally and physically abused students while he was a teacher in Burns Lake, has turned to the internet to help raise money for her legal defence.

Robinson’s lawyer released a statement Monday, saying the reporter is not covered by the insurance at her newspaper the Georgia Straight, and defending her against a defamation lawsuit launched by Furlong will cost at least $100,000.

Robinson says that any extra funds raised will go to health and counseling services in the communities where the witnesses reside.

None of the allegations against Robinson or Furlong have been proven in court.
