Indian dance production – Devdasi: A tale of the temple dancers

Kala Bhavan of Calgary (KBC) is a local Indian dance school which was founded by Roma Thakore in 1987 after she immigrated to Canada from India. This May the school is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a musical production called, Devdasi: A tale of the temple dancers. The show includes an original script, written in collaboration with writers from Mumbai; inspired by history it tells the story of the temple dancers in India, their fall from society during colonialism, and how the dance form evolved into the classical dance form called Bharatnatyam, which is now accepted and practiced widely across the world. Heart Calgary is hosting a summit addressing how to “Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease” with Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr MD. The New York Times Best Selling Author, Surgeon, Medical Researcher and Director of the Esselstyn Program with the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute, Cleveland, Ohio, is a much sought-after authority. Dr. Esselstyn, Jr, MD will be addressing the scientifically proven cure* to “Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease”. The 2011 Heart and Stroke Foundation Report on Canadians’ health, warns that nine out of 10 Canadians are jeopardizing their quality of life and lifespan by ignoring modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr MD, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiologists, is an active member of their Nutrition Committee and promotes evidence-based nutritional science. He has contributed over 150 papers, who lives what he promotes – as an Olympic gold medalist, he eats delicious healthy meals and exercises regularly. This is Dr. Esselstyn’s first visit to Alberta and he will be speaking at two events in Calgary, both on Friday, April 28th. The first event is for medical and allied health professionals and students. This will be held at the Peter Lougheed Centre in the GM Hall Auditorium – Level 0 (basement level) from 12:30-2:00pm. The second event is a ticketed talk for the public beginning at 7pm (doors open at 5:30 pm) at the John Dutton Library Theatre. The net proceeds from this event are being donated to two charities: The Alex, a local Calgary charity that promotes the health and well-being of the most vulnerable through one of its many programs, the “Community Food Centre” and the Pulmonary Hypertension Association of Canada.
