Founded by a Russian-Canadian and launched in a strip mall north of Toronto, the Streit Group has grown into one of the world's largest armoured vehicle manufacturers. While that may seem like a rags-to-riches story, there's a very dark side. Investigated by the United Nations, sanctioned by the European Union, and fined millions of dollars by the U.S. Commerce Department, Streit vehicles have been linked to Russia's war against Ukraine, used by rebel groups in civil wars around the world, and the company has been accused of illegally shipping armoured vehicles to Libya. Ottawa has now placed sanctions on the Streit Group, but as experts told The West Block, it's too little, too late.
