The West Block: June 18, 2023 | Liberals must do more to ‘safeguard’ against foreign interference, O’Toole says
Description
June 18, 2023
After 11 years in federal politics, former Conservative leader Erin O’Toole gave his last speech to Parliament before retiring this summer. In a session that has been marked by heated partisan attacks, O’Toole warned members of Parliament that performance politics is fueling polarization and respectful debate is taking a backseat to social media gratification. ‘The West Block’ host Mercedes Stephenson sat down with O’Toole to discuss the growing division of partisan lines, whether the Liberals are taking national defence seriously, and the government’s handling of foreign interference. Plus, Stephenson sat down with The Globe and Mail Ottawa bureau chief Bob Fife and Stephanie Levitz from The Toronto Star to discuss whether the Liberals can regain Canadians’ trust following a series of political missteps – including Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino’s handling of the transfer of serial rapist and killer Paul Bernardo out of a maximum security prison – or if these debacles are starting to stick to the government.
