Speaking at Quebec City’s historic Citadelle on Wednesday, Pope Francis expressed “deep shame and sorrow” for the harms perpetrated on survivors of the residential school system in Canada. The Pope once again begged for forgiveness for the church’s role in a “deplorable” system that tried to strip Indigenous Peoples of their language, culture and worldview.
