At a news conference in Ottawa on Wednesday, federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh pushed for an “excess profits tax” to expand on Liberals’ proposal of such a policy for banks to also include corporate grocery stores and oil and gas companies, in response to rising inflation and the affordability of living in Canada. According to Singh, the revenue from this tax would go towards increasing Canada’s annual child benefit and GST tax credit by $500 each per year.
