Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday called the diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics by countries including Canada and the U.S. “a mistake” driven by a desire to restrain China’s development. Putin told reporters that Washington will not prevent China’s emergence as a global competitor by using sports “to solve momentary political issues.”
