Chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden, Dr. Anthony Fauci, confirmed Wednesday that the first known case of the Omicron COVID-19 variant had been detected in the U.S. in an individual in California. He said the person was a traveller who returned from South Africa on Nov. 22 and tested positive for the virus variant on Nov. 29. The person was fully vaccinated and had mild symptoms that are improving.
