India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced during the COP26 climate summit on Monday that 2070 would be the target for his country to reach net-zero carbon emissions — two decades beyond what scientists say is needed to avert catastrophic climate impacts. Modi said that along the way, India would also increase the share of renewables in its energy mix to 50 per cent by 2030.
