Premier Jason Kenney acknowledged many First Nations children at residential schools died of diseases common at that time, but said they died at a much higher rate than the general population — pointing out the poor health-care and substandard treatment at the schools. He spoke about the intergenerational trauma among many families that is linked to poor treatment at residential schools.
