On Monday, China said the trial of former Canadian diplomat, Michael Kovrig, who’s been held on espionage charges since 2018, was based on law, and that Beijing “firmly opposed” the gathering of staff from other foreign embassies in support of Kovrig as Canadian officials were banned from attending the closed-door trial.
