German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday that sanctions on Belarus by the European Union, which were agreed upon by bloc leaders on Friday, send an important signal to those who stand in the way of democracy. The sanctions are against about 40 officials accused of rigging Belarus’ August presidential election.
