China’s foreign ministry on Thursday defended a Chinese court’s decision to sentence a Canadian national to death for manufacturing drugs. Spokesperson Wang Wenbin stated that China takes drug crimes very seriously and that China’s death penalty “is a helpful deterrent and prevents drug crimes.” This is the third Canadian to be sentenced to death for drug-related crimes in China since Canada detained Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in 2018.
