George Floyd protests: U.S. House set to pass police reform bill named after Floyd

The U.S. House of Representatives is on the verge of passing police reform legislation named in honour of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Memorial Day. The bill includes a ban on chokeholds and would make it easier to file civil lawsuits against officers accused of misconduct. President Donald Trump, however, has said he won’t support any bill that curtails police powers and, amid ongoing protests that have seen statues toppled in the U.S., will sign an executive order to further protect the statues.
