Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helus was killed in the shooting at a California bar on Wednesday night. A colleague on the police scanner was heard saying, “He died in the line of duty as a true hero.” Helus was a 29-year veteran who was set to retire next year, according to Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean. Helus is survived by his wife and son.
