CALGARY - An early morning fire in the northeast community of Whitehorn on Thursday caused damage to two homes. Crews rushed to White Land Drive N.E. around 4 a.m. The fire was so large that smoke and flames could be seen from McKnight Boulevard N.E., several blocks away. "The majority of the damage started in the back and into the living room and roof," explains Al Magwood from the Calgary Fire Department. "It also spread to the house on the right hand side." A number of nearby homes were evacuated as crews battled the blaze. "We heard a knock at the door, it was police telling us to get out," remembers neighbour Bill Smith. "When we came out it was going really good." The house where the fire originated was badly damaged, but the second home involved received only minor damage to its exterior. In total about 30 to 40 firefighters responded to the fire. No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
