Calgary beekeeper feeling sting from Canada Post decision
Description
May 29, 2014
CALGARY- It’s a case of ‘not in my backyard’—but this time, a Calgary woman is upset about what’s planned for her front yard.
With Canada Post phasing out individual mailboxes, community mailboxes are now being planned, including one in front of Billie Jones’ house.
The beekeeper fears it could mean the end of her business.
“If somebody is allergic or we know many people are afraid of bees, and you have 6,000 bees swarming, I'm sure I'll get a complaint or two,” Jones says.
The mailbox, 20 feet in front of her door, will also block her new garage. Jones can’t understand why Canada Post won’t consider alternative locations, like a nearby park.
The city says federal legislation allows Canada Post to find and approve locations for mailboxes.
“We've gone through a consultation process,” explains Anick Losier from Canada Post. “For this particular resident and others that may have issues, they've been provided with a phone number to let us know what those issues are so we can look into and find alternate solutions.”
Councillor Andre Chabot says he’ll look into the issue, adding that Canada Post has been cooperative so far.
