To help solve the affordability crisis, Feed the Need Durham is taking an upward approach. The food bank says the number of visitors have sky rocketed over the years, so earlier this year, the non-profit organization launched a vertical farming program. With the help of $75,000 from the province, Feed the Need partnered with Mighty Harvest, a local food producer originally based in Oshawa. Since January, the indoor farm has been producing nearly 600 heads of lettuce each week. The food bank says as Durham Region grows in population, the need will as well.
