Peterborough city council approves fast-track moves for Brock Mission project on Chemong Road
Description
February 26, 2025
(aired February 25) Peterborough city council has given Brock Mission a green light to proceed with its proposed transitional housing project on Chemong road adjacent to the Cameron House women's shelter.
Brock Mission's McNabb House would be a six-storey, 52-unit complex nestled between Chemong Road and Bethune Street.
Mayor Jeff Leal used his Strong Mayor Powers to help expedite the project to allow for rezoning and site planning exemption.
Those changes required just one-third of council's approval which it received following a marathon five-hour meeting.
That included 15 residents who shared concerns about the project. They ranged from lack of consultation with the neighbourhoods and Cameron House tenants, shadows from the building, possible decreased property values, safety, and Leal's use of Strong Mayor Powers to fast-track the project.
Voting in favour were Leal with councillors Lesley Parnell, Gary Baldwin and Kevin Duguay.
Councillor Keith Riel voiced concerns about the Strong Mayor Powers which prompted a clash with Parnell.
