Following allegations that Russia air defences were involved in the crash of an Azerbaijani Arlines plane on Christmas Day, President Vladimir Putin has apologized to his Azerbaijani counterpart for the “tragic incident” that left 38 dead. Despite the apology, Putin stopped short of acknowledging the assertions that the plane had been shot down as Russian air defences attempted to deflect a Ukrainian drone strike.
