Following two weeks of heated debates, Australia’s senate has officially voted to pass legislation to ban children under the age of 16 from using social media. Made official on Thursday, this bill will force platforms to take reasonable steps to ensure age-verification protections are in place or face fines of up to AUD$49.5 million. Trial methods to enforce the ban are expected to begin in January before the law takes full effect next November.
