Russia election: Putin wins 5th term in office with 87% of vote

The polls are now closed in Russia’s first presidential election since the country’s full scale invasion of Ukraine. The results confirmed expectations, with Vladimir Putin winning a fifth term as president. The election commission in Moscow says Putin secured around 87 per cent of votes counted so far. Putin’s most prominent critic, Alexei Navalny, died in an Arctic penal colony one month ago. And on Sunday, his exiled wife Yulia Navalnaya called on voters to protest at the polls.
