Nova Scotia's premier is defending a deal cut with a dairy plant intended to help it grow and build new ice cream machines, saying the money is needed to keep the facility competitive.

The government of Nova Scotia is offering the Scotsburn dairy plant in Truro $7.5 million in an effort to help the company expand.
