In Wednesday’s telegram of condolences released by the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin praised Mikhail Gorbachev as a man who left “an enormous impact on the course of world history.”

Mikhail Gorbachev, who ended the Cold War without bloodshed but failed to prevent the collapse of the Soviet Union, died on Tuesday at the age of 91.
