Madrid is hosting two-week, United Nations-sponsored talks aimed at streamlining the rules on global carbon markets.

Lethbridge residents banded together Friday to make their voices heard as part of the global week of climate action inspired by 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

Thousands of people across the province joined a global climate protest saying more needs to be done to combat climate change.

According to organizers, an estimated 500, 000 people marched in the streets of Montreal, marking it the largest strike in the city's history, said Mayor Valerie Plante.

Students joined others in the Fridays For Future rallies at Calgary's City Hall, outside the University of Calgary and outside St. Mary's High School to demand action on climate change.

Thousands of people took over the area in and around Queen's Park on Friday to take part in a climate strike march through the city's downtown core for climate justice.

The strikes are in protest of climate change and the lack of action done against it, and this Friday will mark the second global climate strike after the first on Friday Sept. 20.

A news release from strike organizers on Thursday said the rally is expected to begin around 11 a.m. at Queen's Park.

According to many activist groups, around 860 cities around the world have demonstrations planned for Sept. 27.

The first event was held Friday at noon in front of city hall in Kelowna.
